BLACKFOOT — Before the season began Blackfoot boys soccer coach Liam Pope said his team had one goal for the 2013 season and that was to earn one of the top two seeds in the 4A District 5/6 tournament and the first round bye.
With one strike off the leg of senior Ozzy Oseguera and some tough back lien defense the Broncos earned a 1-0 win, the number two seed and a first round bye in the district tournament.
"I am very happy that we have the first round bye," Pope said. "Let's remember that Century is a very good team and to lose to Century at Century is no shame, it was the way we lost to them that I was not pleased with. But tonight I am happy that we accomplished what we sent out to do when the season began."
Preston came into the game with exactly as much on the line as the Broncos did and Pope and the team knew that it was going to take the teams best effort if the team hoped to snap their recent funk.
After an opening 28 minutes of the game were played in the middle of the field, the Broncos finally got a good run towards the Preston net and that is where Oseguera capitalized.
Oseugera took the ball and ripped a laser from the top of the 18-yard box and into the back of the net.
"I did not think one goal was going to be enough," Pope said. "We had a couple of good chances there to add a second goal but our shots just did not connect."
But while the Broncos offense did not make much out of their chances, it was the Broncos defense that kept the team in the game.
"Our back line defense and the midfield just showed up today,"Pope said. "Preston had a could of chances and did not miss that far post by much there in the final six minutes, but I was pleased that the team was able to get themselves out of the funk they had been in."
As the minutes wound down Pope became more and more on edge as the Preston chances got closer and closer to the net.
In the end the defense held strong.
Blackfoot will take the field on Tuesday at Bonneville High School against a to be determined opponent.
