BLACKFOOT — With less than three minutes to go in the game the Blackfoot Lady Broncos found themselves in a three-point hole to the visiting Bonneville Bees and their hopes of competing for a district championship was dwindling away.
But a running layup by Morningrose Tobey sparked a 9-2 game ending run as the Broncos won their first 4A District 5/6 game in years and advanced to take on top seeded Century with a 61-57 win over the Bees.
"I can not remember the last time we won the first game of our district tournament," Blackfoot head coach Merle Smith said. "This kind of game is better for us than a blowout. Tonight or girls expected to win and you could tell that by the effort they put in."
The Broncos were aggressive on defense in the second half jumping in passing routes forcing turnovers and getting layups.
But the aggressiveness in the final quarter almost cost the Broncos the game as the team got in foul trouble and had to abandon its full court press for a more conservative half court press.
The Bees took advantage finding the open lanes in the defense and wiping out a six-point deficit in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter.
The two teams traded baskets until Tobey's shot jumper with a little more than a minute to go gave the Broncos the lead for good.
"Things did not go our way, we got in foul trouble and the momentum was back and forth," Smith said. "But when we wanted to score and we ran our offense we scored. I thought we had taken control their with the seven-point lead but we backed off and they climbed back in."
The Broncos also had to over come a slow start shooting the basketball as the Bees jumped out to an early lead catching the Broncos off guard.
But as the team has done all season the Broncos rallied quickly and got back in the game. The team went into the locker room up 31-29 after Cassandra Clarke's floater went in at the buzzer.
Tobey led Blackfoot with a game-high 21 points. Madison Leslie and Ella Alvarez each added 12 points.
Blackfoot will now travel and take on top seeded Century on Thursday at 7 p.m.
