Blackfoot swept by Jackson Hole
Blackfoot's Zach Later swings through a pitch during the first game of the doubleheader with Jackson Hole Monday at Blackfoot High School.
BLACKFOOT — One thing can be said about the American Legion baseball season, it's a grind.
Teams pack 40-plus games into a two month window and a lot of things can happen and usually do.
Coming into Monday's doubleheader with Jackson Hole, the Blackfoot Broncos had been playing some really good baseball holding an 8-2 record.
With so many games compressed into a short time frame, bad games will come. The Broncos had theirs Monday.
Blackfoot was swept by Jackson Hole 7-6 and 13-3 in five innings at Blackfoot High School.
Things did not start well for Blackfoot. In game one Broncos pitching loaded the bases twice in the first three innings.
Blackfoot got out of the first bases loaded jam in the first inning unscathed, but the second time the bases were loaded things did not go as the Broncos had hoped.
An error and two walks loaded the bases for Jackson Hole. Kolton Bleggi drew a bases loaded walk and Preston Hadfield drove home another run with an infield single.
But thanks in part to a bases clearing triple by Zach Later the inning before Blackfoot still held a 3-2 lead.
Jackson Hole added four more runs in the fourth inning with a bases clearing double by Sean Riley the innings big blow.
Errors and walks were a problem for Blackfoot all afternoon, unfortunately for the Broncos those mistakes were too much to overcome.
Blackfoot scored two runs in the seventh inning thanks to a Jaron Katseanes and Taylor Pearson scoring on a wild pitch.
But with the tying run on third and two outs Cody Evans struck out to end the game.
"We can not load the bases and hope we are going to get out of it giving up no runs," Blackfoot head coach Jeff Katseanes said. "We battled back but came up a little short."
In game two things started bad for the Broncos and only got worse as the game moved along.
Jackson Hole scored four runs in the second inning. After a leadoff double by Cole Critchfield, back-to-back walks loaded the bases.
Bleggi singled to drive home two of the runs, and the other scored on an error. A second error allowed a fourth run to score a few batters later.
The Broncos scored their three runs in the bottom of the fourth. Cody Evans led off the inning with a double, Jeff Mathie and Dallin Fairchild both singled to load the bases.
Shad Lewis singles to drive in Evans. Zach Later singled to drive in Mathie and Fairchild.
That was all the team could muster off of Jackson Hole starter Seam Riley.
Jackson Hole blew the game open in the top of the fifth when they sent 15 batters to the plate and scored nine runs.
In the inning the Broncos used three pitchers allowed six hits, four walks and an error to score the runs.
"I told the kids you are going to have a game like this," Katseanes said. "I told them all we can do is move on from it and come out Thursday with a clean slate."
Blackfoot 8-4 take the field again Thursday at Minico High School for the Burley Wood Bat Tournament.
The Broncos take on Minico at 11 a.m. and Upper Valley at 1:30 p.m.
