Blackfoot to be host of marathon next year

November 13, 2011

The Morning News — Melanie Moore Tiffany Eaton and her daughter Katelyn prepare to cross the finish line after completing the 5K run at the Blackfoot Tater Trot. The duo finished 27th and 28th overall in the 5K race with times of 37:25 and 37:26.

BLACKFOOT — Nearly 90 runners participated in the first Blackfoot Tater Trot race on Saturday, braving wet, windy and cold conditions to run in the inaugural race.
The race set the scene for a big announcement — the Tommy Vaughn's Marathon will take place in Blackfoot next year on May 19.
The event will feature several race lengths including a full and half marathon, 10K, 5K and a one-mile run for kids. Like the Tater Trot, the marathon will be a fundraising event for the Community Dinner Table and will benefit several programs including weekly winter dinners, the Blackfoot Community Garden and Mobile Food Pantry.
"We're going to do this," race director Jon Lyksett said. "There's no reason a town like this can't have that kind of event."
The course will include the trails on the greenbelt and rural roads. The flat course will be a good place to start for those beginning to run or for seasoned runners wanting to set personal records.
And the turnout Saturday morning, with runners braving the wind, rain and snow, is an early indication the event should be a success.
The Tater Trot attracted Susan Wallentine to Blackfoot from Pocatello. It was her first race, and she finished 24th overall in the 5K.
"I feel a good sense of accomplishment," Wallentine said. "It wasn't as hard as I thought it would be."
There was also at least one runner who travelled to Blackfoot from Boise for the Tater Trot.
Lyksett said within one hour of posting the marathon event on active.com with no notice, three people had already registered. He also noted the race is the same day as the Ogden Marathon, which is sold out.
To register for the race, go to active.com and search for "Tommy Vaughn's Marathon." Those registering before the end of the year can enter the marathon for $50. The half marathon is $40, 10K is $25, 5K is $20 and the Sprout Run is $10.
