Bees hand Broncos rare home loss on the mats
Hyatt Henderson battles his Bonneville foe at 98 pounds on Wednesday evening.
BLACKFOOT — Like Bigfoot sightings in the Plaza home duel wrestling losses for the Blackfoot Broncos are extremely rare. In the first time in a long time that is exactly what happened on Wednesday evening however as High Country Conference foe Bonneville came into Blackfoot and left town with a 36-34 victory.
"We were at a deficit of 12 points right off the bat which had us fighting out of a hole all night long," Blackfoot head coach Thain Cashmore said. "Bonneville matches up well with us in a lot of weight classes though. We wrestled well and if we could have swung one more of the close matches to our side we could have pulled this one out."
Indeed the forfeits at 126 and 195 certainly hurt the Broncos chances but despite that, they came out firing early with pins by Hyatt Henderson and Lane Hunt in the opening two matches for a quick 12-0 advantage.
A close 2-0 decision by Justin Holman at 113 got the Bees on the board but Blackfoot's Devon Schoonover picked up a pin at 120 for an 18-3 Blackfoot lead.
After the forfeit at 126 Blackfoot picked up decisions in three of the next four matches to build a 28-15 lead but Bonneville came roaring back, winning the next five matches and despite a thrilling third period pin by Blackfoot's heavyweight, Jonathan Littlejohn, the fate was sealed with the rare 36-34 duel loss.
"We saw great heart from each and everyone of our kids tonight," Coach Cashmore said. "We will take the positives that we saw tonight along with what we see that we need to improve upon and we will continue to work. It's a continuing, evolving process and we will need to continue to learn and improve if we want to stay competitive."
Blackfoot will continue that process when they head to Minico over the weekend for the Minico Invitational tournament. It will be the last individual tournament of the regular season before the district tournament which will be held in February. Wrestling begins at 3:00 p.m. on Friday and will continue on Saturday morning at 10:00 a.m.
