Alvina Cecilia Fred Mendez, 88
Alvina Cecilia Fred Mendez,88, passed away Saturday morning on August 23, 2014 to be with our father and her loved ones that have gone before her.
Alvina was born to Johnnie Fred and Amelia Osborne Fred on October 8, 1925 at the old Fort Hall Hospital in Fort Hall, ID. As a young girl she was raised by her grandfather Tom Madzaweyu and considered his daughter and Marie Madzeweyu Hardy her mother. Alvina’s Indian name was “Cedar Top”. She was raised with Charlene Hardy Browning and loved her as her little sister to her last day.
She married Magdaleno S. Mendez and they had ten children, Ardith Peyope (Jona-deceased), Marlene (deceased), Robert Louis Sr. (deceased), Richard (Josephine), Angela (John), Ortencia Puhuyoama (Norman), Thomas (Teresa), Gonzalo (Debbie), Susan Zazueta, and Julian (Stella).
Alvina attended school at Fort Hall Boarding School, Good Shepherd Mission School and Stewart Indian boarding school. She also attended Weber State University where she took child development classes and taught modules for Head Start teachers for a year (late 70’s).
Alvina operated the Timbee Hall cafeteria for a number of years and later sold lunches in the various tribal and BIA buildings.
She was well known for her homemade cooking and pies. She loved to sing country and gospel music. She enjoyed doing beadwork, quilting, embroidery, and tri-chem painting. She loved to go fishing and enjoyed going to pow-wows. She also loved gardening.
Alvina is survived by her sisters, Eva Tyler Buck and Charlene Browning; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, 30 grandchildren, 60 great grandchildren and other relatives.
She was preceded in death by her parents; grandparents; son, Robert L. Mendez Sr.; daughter, Marlene S. Mendez; sister, Katherine Thompson; brothers, Arthur Fred Sr. and Bryon Johnson; grandchildren, Richard Peyope and Josette Weiser; and great grandson, Raymundo Salazar.
Memorial services will be held on Monday, August 25, 2014 at Mountain View Baptist Church off S. Riverton Rd. at 2:00 PM. Cremation and burial arrangements will be done according to her wishes at Hawker Funeral Home. Lunch will be served and the family will receive visitors from 10:00 AM until services.
