Blackfoot tennis earns sweep of Rigby on windy senior day

BLACKFOOT — Blackfoot's Scott Cannon spent most of this season playing mixed doubles with Baylee Gorder.
But with Gorder out sick, Cannon had to move to singles Wednesday against district foe Rigby.
Long after all the other matches had finished Cannon and Rigby's Jared Neville were battling in a third set tiebreaker. After losing the first set 7-5, Cannon battled back and won the next two sets 6-2 and 6-1 to lead the Blackfoot boys to a 6-0 victory over the Trojans. The Bronco girls also defeated the Trojans 4-2 on a blustery senior day at Blackfoot High School.

Bair signs to play volleyball for Dixie State

THOMAS — On Tuesday Snake River's Brylie Bair signed a letter-of-intent to play volleyball at Dixie State.
"Actually I chose Dixie because I love the girls," Bair said of her new teammates. "I love the warmth and I have family down there.
"I love the coach, too," Bair said, noting that Robyn Felder made her feel comfortable.
Bair will be leaving teammates with whom she has played since fourth grade. They won the Class 3A state championship, defeating Parma in the title game.
"I have had some great coaches (at Snake River)," she said. "They have taught me a lot."

Russets win slugfest over Broncos 12-8

BLACKFOOT — Over the last week the Shelley Russets have put on quite the offensive show.
After winning the Buhl Tournament last weekend where they won all four games they played outscoring their opponents 47-12, the Russets defeated Teton and Sugar-Salem earlier this week to open district play.
Saturday the Russets traveled down Highway 91 to take on the Blackfoot Broncos and if you were a fan of offense Blackfoot High School was the place to be.

Schmitt signs to be a Wolverine

SHELLEY — For many sports fans in Bingham County when the name Kaden Schmitt comes up in conversation it is more often than not about his exploits on the football field.
Schmitt was named the 3A State player of the year after leading the Russets to their second consecutive 3A state championship. But while Schmitt was a stellar football player, baseball is first love and the sport he hoped to get an opportunity to play in college.

Broncos split doubleheader with Rigby

BLACKFOOT — All season long the buzz up and down the Snake River plain has been about how good the Rigby High School softball team has been.
The Trojans have been hitting the ball well and hitting it with power keeping them in close games and even beating some of East Idaho's top teams.
Rigby visited Blackfoot on Thursday for a 4A District 5/6 doubleheader with the Broncos.
And while the Trojans did hit the ball during the afternoon, it was one bad inning in game one that cost the Broncos the chance of a doubleheader sweep.

Blackfoot golfers host Idaho Falls and Hillcrest

BLACKFOOT — The Blackfoot High School golf team took to the links of the Blackfoot Golf Course Wednesday afternoon to take on Idaho Falls and Hillcrest.
The teams played nine holes during the afternoon.On the boys side Hillcrest finished first with a score of 157, Blackfoot finished third with a score of 184.
Kaden Loveland and Aaron Carter led the Broncos by each shooting 43 on the afternoon. Mason Gillins shot a 46, Kyler Croxford finished at 52 and Shan Leavitt shot a 55.
Hillcrest's Andy Hess shot the low score of the day with a 37.

Russets double up Redskins to open district play

SHELLEY — Prior to Tuesday District 6 opener with Teton, Shelley head coach Trent Armstrong reminded his team of the goal they had set for the themselves for the next few weeks.
Go through district play 6-0.
The Russets knew that the visiting Redskins were going to be tough. They also had to deal with Mother Nature who threw 30-plus mph winds and even a little rain at both schools.
But Shelley got a a solid start from Tyler Bean and six RBI hits to earn a 6-3 win over Teton at Shelley High School.

Lady Broncos end Lady Panthers winning streak at 13 with 11-10 win

BLACKFOOT — After watching their one run led slip away in the top of the seventh inning on a wild throw that allowed a run to score, the Blackfoot Lady Broncos knew they had to aggressive if they wanted to pull out a win and end the crosstown rival Panthers 13-game winning streak.
The Broncos were just that.
Sami Macfee led of the bottom of the seventh with a single and stole second and then came around to score on a ground ball to third hit by Madison Rigby when the throw sailed over the first baseman's head and out of play giving Blackfoot the 11-10 victory.
