Lady Cougars, Panthers and Russets begin quest for state volleyball titles today

TWIN FALLS — For the defending state volleyball champion Snake River Lady Panthers and Firth Lady Cougars the run for a repeat state championship begins today as the state volleyball tournaments begin in the Twin Falls area today.
Shelley also returns to the state tournament for the second consecutive season with the goal of bringing a title back to Shelley.
While Firth and Snake River are the defending champions each team looks drastically different than a year ago when they ran the 2A and 3A brackets on the way to titles.

It's playoff time in Bingham County

BLACKFOOT — A journey for a state championship that began on Aug. 29 moves on to the final 12 this week with the opening of the state football playoffs all over then state.
All five Bingham County schools qualified for this years playoffs and four of the five will play beginning tonight.
Shelley, Snake River, Firth and Aberdeen all play this week, while Blackfoot earned a first round bye after winning the District 5/6 title over Rigby last Friday.

Panthers run past Eagles 49-0 to win district championship

THOMAS — With 13.7 seconds left in the first half Friday night the Marsh Valley Eagles lined to up to punt to Snake River for what seemed like the 100th time in the opening half.
But what the Panther faithful did not know was that the fail 13.7 seconds would feature a games worth of craziness.
On the punt return the Panthers Wyatt Vogler was picked up and body slammed to the ground by the Eagles Seth Hansen.
As Vogler hit the turf, the benches emptied on both sides of the field as a half worth of frustration had come to a head.

Lady Panthers win district crown in straight sets over Beavers

THOMAS — When Snake River and American Falls met in the 3A District 5 volleyball tournament on Tuesday the Panthers had their hands full with the feisty Beavers squad that had nothing to lose.
The two teams met again on Thursday with the district championship and state berth on the line and for the Panthers fans in attendance the result was a much better one.
The Lady Panthers win the match in straight sets 25-21, 25-18, 25-19 at Snake River High School on Thursday.
The first half of the opening set was a battle as neither team was able to take a lead more than three points.

Lady Russets win, Broncos fall at state soccer tournament

POST FALLS — The Blackfoot Broncos fell in the opening round of the 4A state soccer tournament 2-1 to Canyon Ridge Thursday at Post Falls High School.
Jordan Garcia got the Broncos on the board with a goal in the 20th minute.
But Canyon Ridge scored a pair of goals in a five minute stretch of the second half to take the lead for good.
"We played pretty well today," Blackfoot head coach Liam Pope said. "That is a very good Canyon Ridge team and we did a lot of good things against them."
Blackfoot takes on Bishop Kelly today at 9 a.m. at Coeur d'Alene High School in an elimination game.

Stewart, Drollinger win district titles, Lady Russets take team title

SHELLEY — The Shelley Lady took the top four spots and the team title in the 3A District 6 cross country meet at Journey's End Golf Course in Shelley Wednesday afternoon, while junior and defending state champion Austin Stewart took home the boys individual title.
Stewart ran the course in 16:26 a full 1:03 ahead of second place Kaden Hamblin of Sugar-Salem.
Shelley's Chase Barrow came home in fifth and David Searle was sixth for the Russet boys who finished second in the team standings behind Sugar-Salem who won the event with 31 points.

Lady Panthers struggle, but earn berth in district title game

THOMAS — The Snake River Lady Panthers volleyball team are use to cruising through district tournaments.
But this season has not been a normal one for the defending 3A state champs, but the Panthers still earned the top seed in the 3A District 5 tournament that began Tuesday at Snake River High School.
It was not even remotely close to the prettiest game the Lady Panthers have played this year and early in set four the Snake River faithful were getting uncomfortable in their seats as the home trailed a very aggressive American Falls team.

Huskies spoil senior night for the Cougars with 22-16 victory

FIRTH — Just before halftime Friday night one of the light banks on the Firth High School football field went out with North Fremont setting up for a First and goal from the Cougar five yard line.
After as brief discussion between Firth head coach Keith Drake and the officials the teams moved down to the other end of the field to continue play while the lights came back on.
The Huskies punched the ball in two plays later from three yards out to take a 16-8 lead heading into halftime.
