After a slow start, Panthers cruise past Beavers in straight sets

THOMAS — It was not the start Snake River volleyball coach Shelli VanOrden was hoping for as her team dug themselves a very early 12-2 hole to visiting American Falls.
But the defending stat champions did not let the early struggles get to them, instead they regrouped and refocused and ended up taking down the visiting Beavers in straight sets25-19, 25-10, 28-18 at Snake River High School on Saturday afternoon.

Bees ambush Russets, 32-7

IONA – It isn’t often that you see a Shelley Russet football team look bad in a game.
But from the word go Friday night at Thunder Stadium against Bonneville the Russets looked bad, really bad.
Bonneville quarterback Bradley Smith threw for 257 yards and three touchdowns as the Bees cruised to a 32-7 win over the Russets.

Diggers down Panthers in four sets

THOMAS — Michone Bingham had 15 kills and Chaise Dodson added 12 as Sugar-Salem defeated Snake River 3-1 in volleyball on Thursday.
The Diggers opened with a 25-15 win in game one, breaking from a 7-7 tie with six straight points and sweeping to the victory.
In game two the Panthers broke from a 15-15 tie with a 5-1 run with Sarah Goodwin at the service line. Snake River won 25-22 as Sarah Reece finished the game with a service ace.
Both teams played well in game three, but the Diggers finished with a 6-1 spurt to claim a 25-20 win. Abby Allen's kill finished that spurt.

Broncos make a statement with 5-2 win over Preston

BLACKFOOT — Prior to the season Blackfoot head boys soccer coach Liam Pope said that the 2014 Broncos team would not roll over for anyone and would love to play spoiler for someone this season.
After taking more than a few lumps in the teams 1-4-1 start and coming oh so close in a 2-1 loss to Hillcrest on Saturday the Broncos welcomed a very tough Preston team to town.
But after 80 minutes on a hot 90 degree afternoon was finished the Broncos had sent a message to the rest of District 5/6, the Broncos are not rebuilding.

Blackfoot hammers Idaho Falls, 36-7

The Blackfoot Broncos made a statement in Friday night’s 36-7 win over Idaho Falls. That statement is the Broncos are back and are going to be a force the remainder of the season.
Pacen Hayes threw for 186 yards and a touchdown and Damon Bodkin added 88 yards and a pair of touchdowns while the Broncos' defense played as close to a flawless game as possible to hand Blackfoot its third consecutive victory over a 5A opponent this season.

Lady Cougars get revenge in five set win over Lady Diggers

FIRTH — A week ago the Firth and Sugar-Salem volleyball teams battled in a five set match in Sugar City in which the home standing Diggers won in five sets.
Thursday they met again this time in Firth, and again the home team won in five sets.
Firth earned a tough five set win 14-25, 25-18, 25-20, 22-25, 15-10 at a raucous Firth High School.
"We didn't play very well in that opening set," Firth head coach Carla Reeves said. "I told them before the game that our defense was lacking when we played them up there and after that first game we tightened all of that up."

Lady Russets start slow, but take down Marsh Valley in straight sets

SHELLEY — The home opener usually brings lots of excitement and for the players usually lots of jitters.
For the Shelley Lady Russet volleyball team Wednesday night's home opener against Marsh Valley brought both.
The Russets started the match slow, struggling to get anything going in the first two sets before waking up in set three to take down the Eagles in three sets 25-19, 25-20, 25-11.

Russets hold off pesky Aberdeen earning a 4-2 victory Saturday

SHELLEY — Like their Lady Russets teammates the Shelley Russets boys soccer team entered Saturday'a match-up with Aberdeen undefeated.
While not quite the scoring machine that the Lady Russets are the boys are scoring thanks to their fast play and solid defense.
Thanks in part to a pair of first half goals from Edwardo Gonzolas the Russets were able to withstand a second half Aberdeen rally and a pair of goals from Juan Juarez to earn a 4-2 win.
