Community Pantry progressing

BLACKFOOT — Work was in high gear on Saturday at the Bingham Community Pantry at 245 W. Sexton in Blackfoot.
"We will have a building to feed people," said Lee Hammett, chairman of the CDT board.
The Bingham Community Pantry is part of the Community Dinner Table (CDT).
On Saturday, volunteers were putting up walls, putting in doors, working on plumbing and electrical wiring.
Contractor Tad Stoker of Final Touch Exteriors was measuring and installing the plywood for walls with the assistance of Chris Cannon, president of the Blackfoot South Stake.

Lady Cougars battle rain to get senior night win

FIRTH — The Firth Lady Cougars have made some real strides during the 2014 season.
After going winless for over 18 months the squad picked up a big win earlier this season on the road over South Fremont. The team also had numerous games where one bounce could have changed a loss to a win.
Under a persistent rain Saturday night the Lady Cougars took to the pitch one last time under the light's of the Firth High School football stadium for senior night against South Fremont.
The Cougars recognized the 11 seniors who have given so much to the program since it was started three seasons ago.

Mother Nature spoils ‘Buck Bowl’

BLACKFOOT — Mother Nature really did not want to cooperate Friday night.
In the hour leading up to the annual 'Buck Bowl' the clouds around Blackfoot High School began to darken and the threat of rain became evident as the lightening was getting closer and closer tot he field.
After the opening kick-off was delayed an hour by weather the Broncos and Bobcats got onto the field, but they didn't even get to halftime before they were pulled off the field again, this time for good.

BHS unveils new mascot at Homecoming rally

BLACKFOOT — The Blackfoot High School Homecoming pep assembly on Friday was full of energy and full of surprises as the student body got pumped up for Friday's football game against the Madison High School Bobcats. This year's Homecoming theme is "Flashback to the 50s."
As was anticipated, a brand new "lean, mean and green," Bronco mascot was unveiled in a humorous student skit, officially retiring the worn out 1970s and 1990s mascots.

Woman finds 2-headed baby turtle

HUDSON, Maine (AP) — A woman in Maine has come across a two-headed baby snapping turtle that was trying to cross the road.
Kathleen Talbot of Hudson tells WLBZ-TV she found the tiny creature this week while she was watching turtle hatchlings to make sure they arrived safely at the other side of the street.
She noticed one of the turtles had been left behind. It was so dirty she thought at first that it had two feet in front.
It wasn't until she got home and washed off the turtle that she realized it had two heads. The turtle fits easily into the palm of her hand.

LaRue Grimmett, 89

LaRue Grimmett, 89, passed away Tuesday, September 23, 2014 at her home.
LaRue attended schools in the Moreland area.
She married T. Duane Grimmett in Blackfoot, Idaho on January 8, 1942. Together they had five children; Diana, Perry, Sherrill, Denny, and Steven. They lived in Blackfoot for many years and raised their family there.
She enjoyed sewing and embroidery.

Emory Lavar White, 97

Emory Lavar White, 97, of Blackfoot, Idaho passed away Thursday, September 25, 2014 at his home.
Emory was born August 22, 1917 to Emory White and Margurite Lucille Cowley in Cleveland, Utah the second oldest child of five boys and two girls.  When he was eight years old, his family moved to National Mining Camp near Helper, Utah for one year.  They then moved back to Cleveland, where Emory attended school and played basketball on the Young Men Mutual team for the church and loved to roller skate.

Maria Esperanza Vera, 69

Maria Esperanza Vera, 69, of Blackfoot, Idaho passed away Thursday, September 25, 2014 at her home with her family by her side.
Maria was born March 18, 1945 to Marcos Santillan Munoz and Margarita Bautista Rodriguez in El Salitre, Villanueva, Zacatecas, Mexico.
On July 4, 1964 Maria married Jose Vera in Tayahua, Mexico.
Maria and Jose moved to Moreland in 1982 and has lived here since.

Sarah “Nadine” High, 82

Sarah “Nadine” High, 82, of Blackfoot, Idaho passed away Wednesday, September 24, 2014 at her home surrounded by her family.
She was born February 19, 1932 in Menan, Idaho the daughter of Hans Emanuel Olaveson and Martha Denning Olaveson.
On September 21, 1947 she married Leo F. High in Idaho Falls, Idaho. They just celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary. 
Nadine was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.  She was a member of the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers. She retired from JcPenney after 20 years.

Name released on farm accident

SHELLEY — The name of the man who died after being pinned between farm trucks has been released.
The man who died was Armando Madrid-Rivera, age 61, from Roberts. Family members have been notified.
The accident occurred at 6:50 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 23, in front of a potato cellar on the R&C Farms. The farm is located west of Shelley, just west of exit 108 on Interstate 15.
