BHS Principal McInelly takes medical leave

Blaine McInelly, Blackfoot High School Principal, has requested a leave of absence due to health reasons for the remainder of the year at which time he will be retiring, according to a press release from the Blackfoot School District. Ben Speelmon will be working as an educational consultant at Blackfoot High School during McInelly’s absence.

Devon Howell, 78

Devon Howell, a most kind and gentle man, passed away on January 8th, 2011 due to complications of Alzheimer’s disease. He was 78 years old. He enjoyed the simple things of life and being with his family and friends—especially over a good meal.
Devon was born on May 31, 1932 in Blackfoot, Idaho to Reta Fackrell and Newell Howell. He graduated from Blackfoot High School and Brigham Young University. He enjoyed sports in his youth and as an adult. Devon was in the grocery business all of his life and owned a few businesses of his own.

Panthers out-duel Cougars

THOMAS — On a night in which the current crop of Snake River wrestlers paid tribute to the founder of Snake River wrestling, Keith Williams. Snake River capped the evening with a hard fought 43-24 duel win over Bingham County rival Firth on Wednesday night at Snake River High School.

Harlem Eugene ‘Willy’ Wilson

Harlem Eugene “Willy” Wilson, 76, died Monday, Jan. 10, 2011, at his home in Arco.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, Jan. 15, 2011, at 1 p.m. at the Anderson Family Funeral Home, 2555 N. Highway 93, Arco with Seth Beal conducting. The family will receive friends Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. and for one hour prior to services. Interment will be in the Hillcrest Cemetery in Arco.

Russets take round one with win over Broncos

BLACKFOOT — After back-to-back treys by Blackfoot's Beau Hoskins and Trae Pilster the Broncos and the Russets were locked at 48-48 with just over a minute remaining.
On the ensuing offensive possession, Shelley point guard McKay Cannon hit a streaking Chad Cather behind the Blackfoot press for a quick lay up, giving the Russets a lead that they never surrendered in a huge 55-48 victory at Blackfoot High School.

Local woman competes to build village

BLACKFOOT — Today is the first anniversary of the earthquake that devastated Haiti.
Blackfoot resident Beverly Beach is passionate about helping people in Haiti.
Last September, Beach and her co-director, Katie Tirion, spent two weeks in Haiti checking out land the Haitian government has designated for a quality housing expo. The goal is to build housing that will protect the families.
"I saw people living between two streets; if they stepped into the road, they could get hit," she said. "People live in horrific conditions; the water conditions are horrible.

Marlene Hale Yancey, 76

Marlene Hale Yancey,  a resident of Firth, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Jan. 9, 2011, at the age of 76.
Marlene was born on Dec. 20, 1934, in Provo, Utah, to Nathan Hale and Phyllis Watson Hale. She moved to Groveland as a young child with her family.

Parmenter wins American Legion oratory contest

BLACKFOOT — Blackfoot High School senior Lacie Parmenter won the Blackfoot area American Legion Oratory Contest Monday evening.
In this contest, Parmenter presented a prepared speech on the U.S. Constitution. She needed to speak from eight to 10 minutes. She spoke 8.6 minutes on voting rights and civic participation.
"I went into the history of voting and its importance in America," Parmenter said. "I touched on discrimination in voting and the soldiers who have fought to preserve our right to vote.
"My generation is looked down upon," Parmenter said, "so I kind of defended us."

BHS boys' basketball coach reinstated

BLACKFOOT — The Blackfoot High School varsity basketball coach placed on leave last month was reinstated Monday. The coach was placed on leave in December pending a criminal investigation involving former student athletes.
According to a press release issued by the Blackfoot School District Monday, "the administrative leave from coaching duties of Blackfoot High School Boys’ Basketball Head Varsity Coach Jonathan Packer has been rescinded effective immediately." The action was taken following investigations by the district and the Bingham County Prosecutor's Office.

Ethel Chilton Henderson

POCATELLO – Ethel Chilton Henderson, 90, eternal companion of Boyd F. Henderson, passed away Thursday, Jan. 6, 2011, at her home.
Funeral services will be held Friday, Jan. 14, 2011, at 1 p.m. at the LDS Central Stake Center (40 Oakwood Drive) with Bishop Rod Johnson of the Cedar 2nd Ward officiating.
The family will receive friends Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Manning-Wheatley Funeral Chapel, 510 N. 12th Ave. and on Friday from 12 to 12:45 p.m. at the church prior to services.
Interment will be in Restlawn Memorial Gardens.
