BLACKFOOT âÂ A memorial fundraiser for Steve Aubrey will be Tuesday. The Blackfoot High School Debate and Speech team is sponsoring a memorial dinner and auction to raise money for a headstone for Steve Aubrey who passed away on Dec, 31, 2010, from a lingering illness. Aubrey was an assistant debate coach in 2008-2009.
The suggested donation for the dinner is $5 per person or $20 per family. The fundraiser will take place on the stage at the Blackfoot Performing Arts Center beginning at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
A family clears a bed at the Blackfoot Community Garden as a group of volunteers assist Austin Worthington, 13, build a garden shed for his Eagle Scout project. Those with plots in the garden and volunteers are working to get the garden ready for planting and the Garden Festival, a grand opening celebration scheduled for May 14.
WASHINGTON (AP) â Osama bin Laden, the mastermind behind the Sept. 11 attacks against the United States, is dead, and the U.S. is in possession of his body, a person familiar with the situation said late Sunday.
Two senior counterterrorism officials confirmed that bin Laden was killed in Pakistan last week. One said bin Laden was killed in a ground operation, not by a Predator drone. Both said the operation was based on U.S. intelligence, and both said the U.S. is in possession of bin Laden's body.
BLACKFOOT âSixty-five students at Stalker Elementary received free hats, free books and a party to celebrate reaching their reading goals Friday afternoon.
"Every year it gets bigger and bigger," said Jamie Trevino, the representative for the Volunteers In Service To America (VISTA) at Stalker Elementary. Last year, 40 kids completed the reading challenge.
"It's because of support from the administration and community, donations and grant writing that we have these gifts to give away," Trevino said.
BLACKFOOT âTrustees of the Blackfoot School District has hired a new principal at Blackfoot High School. In January, former Principal Blaine McInelly took a medical leave of absence until the end of this school year, at which point he will retire.
The Blackfoot School Board of Trustees approved the hiring on John Pearce at their meeting Thursday night. He will officially begin his duties as principal July 28.
POCATELLO âÂ Cecil Allen âBudâ Lish, 86, a longtime resident of Pocatello, passed away Tuesday, April 26, 2011, at a local care center following an extended illness.
Funeral services will be held Monday, May 2, 2011, at 1 p.m. at Manning-Wheatley Funeral Chapel, 510 N. 12th Ave. with Ed Reese, brother-in-law officiating. Interment will be in Restlawn Memorial Gardens with military graveside rites provided by the Pocatello Veterans Honor Guard.Â
Donald Cannon, 69, of Blackfoot passed away Thursday, April 28, 2011, at the Bingham Skilled Nursing and Rehab.
Funeral arrangements are pending under the direction of Hawker Funeral Home and will be announced.
Joe Trent Caldwell, 30, of Pingree, died April 25, 2011, as a result of complications due to asthma.Â
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 30, 2011, at Hawker Funeral Home, 132 S. Shilling Ave., Blackfoot.Â The family will meet with friends and family from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, April 29, 2011, at the funeral home and again for one hour prior to service.Â Interment will be in the Riverside-Thomas Cemetery.
Fred Keith Merrell, 89, of Neosho, Mo. and formerly of Blackfoot, passed away, Wednesday, April 27, 2011, at the Medicalodge Nursing Home in Neosho, Mo.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, May 6, 2011, at the Blackfoot LDS Stake Center. The family will meet with friends and family from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, May 5, 2011, at Hawker Funeral Home, 132 S. Shilling Ave., Blackfoot and again for one hour prior to services at the church. Interment will be in the Grove City Cemetery.
Robert Marion Kerr Jr., 97, of Mapleton, Utah, and, formerly of Blackfoot, passed away Thursday, April 28, 2011, at his home from causes incident to age.
