BLACKFOOT â€” Students in the Ridge Crest Limited English Proficiency (LEP) after school program celebrated Posadas with their families and teachers Wednesday evening. The Posadas, a Christmas tradition in Mexico, includes a reenactment of the procession into Bethlehem, culminating with a fiesta.
Approximately 25 students participate in the LEP after-school program Monday through Thursday. They receive help with their homework, work on special projects and get extra support from bilingual staff.
THOMAS â€”Â Russell Hammond, superintendent of the Snake River School District, is retiring July 31, 2012.
District trustees have begun searching for his replacement. The application period began Dec. 1 and runs through Wednesday, Feb. 15, 2012. Applications must be received by the February date. To date, one application has been received.
"Are we working under a deadline?" asked trustee Steve Reader.
"Yes, you probably want someone in place by July 1," Hammond said.
HAMILTON, Mont. â€” Anina S, Johner, 80, died Sunday, Dec. 18, 2011 at home under the care of her daughter, Sherry Vetter and Aspen Hospice of Stevensville, Mont., after a short battle with leukemia.
She is survived by children: Sherry Vetter, Bruce, Paul, and Doug Johner and Tracy Wooldridge. She has 11 grandkids, 19 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. She is survived by one sister, Claudia Bailey; and numerous extended family members.
She was born in Canada, grew up in Cashmere, Wash. and lived in the Yakima Valley, Seattle area, Alaska, Montana and Idaho.

BLACKFOOT â€” The Blackfoot City Council hired a subcontractor to assist with engineering responsibilities in the Public Works department at its meeting Tuesday night.
The city solicited three bids for engineering services from Harper-Leavitt Engineering, Keller Engineering and Fred Davies, a retired engineer.
Davies submitted the lowest bid of $24,960 annually. The position is part-time, at-will and has no benefits. Davies is a licensed engineer.
The city has been without a Public Works engineer for more than two years.
BLACKFOOT â€” As she sat at a table at St. Bernard Catholic Church's parish hall on Saturday, Gerry Mathias signed and sold a few copies of her newly published children's book, "Cookies for Frankie."
"This has been a three-year process," Mathias said of publication of her book. She said she decided to publish it after entering it in an Idaho Writer's League contest and earning second place.
"I decided maybe this was worth it," she said. She noted it is the true story of how a set of cookie cutters which have been in her family for nearly a century came to be made.
BLACKFOOT â€“Â Organizers and volunteers for the Community Dinner Table and Idaho Foodbank gathered at the Needlecraft Building at the Eastern Idaho Fairgrounds Monday morning preparing Christmas boxes to be distributed today.
Distribution will begin at 10 a.m.; numbers for your place in line will be available beginning at 7 a.m. All recipients must be in line by 9:30 a.m. Boxes will include a frozen turkey or whole chicken and a variety of canned, dried and fresh food including eggs, bread, milk and fresh fruit.
BLACKFOOT â€“Â Rockets were launching, balloons were bursting and imaginationsÂ soaring last week as students at Idaho Science and Technology Charter School learned alongside teacher Chad Majeske and INL professionals.
Getting students to like math and science is important to Majeske. He says studies indicate it is in middle school that students decide if they like math and science.
"It's not about whether or not they are good at math and science," said Majeske. "If we can just get them to like it, then when it gets hard they will stick with it."
Daniel Anderson, 56, of Blackfoot, passed away Sunday, Dec. 18, 2011 at the Bingham Memorial Hospital.
Funeral arrangements are pending under the direction of Hawker Funeral Home and will be announced.
Leola Phyllis Line, 81, passed away Saturday, Dec. 17, 2011 at the Highland Hills Assisted Living.
A visitation will be from 6-7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 21, at Davis-Rose Mortuary, 170 Idaho St., American Falls. The graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 22, 2011 at the Springfield-Sterling Cemetery in Springfield. A full obituary will be in a future edition of the Morning News.
