October 19, 2011

Robert “Bob” Jay Wilkes, 83, of Springfield passed away Monday, Oct. 17, 2011 at his home.
Arrangements are pending under the direction of Hawker Funeral Home and will be announced in a full obituary.

Walter ‘Vern’ Inskeep

Walter “Vern” Inskeep 77, of Aberdeen passed away Monday Oct. 17, 2011.
The funeral will be at 11:30 a.m. Monday, Oct. 24, 2011 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 149 W. Central, Aberdeen.
The visitation will be Sunday, Oct. 23, 2011 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at Davis- Rose Mortuary, 170 Idaho Street, American Falls and at the church an hour before the funeral. Interment will be at Aberdeen Cemetery.

Gerald (Gerry) Frank Ramsey, 73

Gerald (Gerry) Frank Ramsey of Los Alamos, N.M. passed away on Oct. 17, 2011, in Santa Fe at the Beehive Assisted Living Home after a long and courageous battle with Parkinson’s disease.
He was born to Frank and Beatrice Joyce Woodford Ramsey on July 12, 1938 in Missoula, Mont. He grew up in Ames, Iowa, and graduated from Ames High in 1956. Gerry received a BS in Metallurgical Engineering from the University of Kansas in 1965. He later attended Idaho State University and graduated with his MBA in 1981.

Panthers prevail in 5 game nail biter

THOMAS — There's an ages old coaching cliche that says we play them one point at a time. On Tuesday night, that statement couldn't have been more profound as the Snake River Panthers literally took it to the Bear Lake Bears one point at a time down the stretch as they advanced to the fifth district title game with a thrilling come from behind victory 25-23, 25-12, 24-26, 21-25 and 16-14..
"That was it. That was never say die," Snake River head coach Shelli VanOrden said. "I'm so happy and proud of these girls. They never quit playing and fought all the way through to the end."

P&Z draft ordinance nears completion

BLACKFOOT — Planning and Zoning (P&Z) commissioners worked on completing the final details on the Bingham County Proposed Zoning Ordinance last Wednesday.
They discussed three points. These included commercial wind turbines, transmission lines and animal units.

Blackfoot teacher, friend visit 9/11 Memorial

BLACKFOOT –  A little over a week ago, Mountain View Middle School teacher Bekki Mangum and Blackfoot artist Willie Preacher were touring the 9/11 Memorial in New York City.
“It’s a trip I would never have gone on without Bekki,” Preacher said.
Mangum said the adventure started last May when Preacher won two airline tickets to anywhere in the United States. After some discussion, the couple settled on a trip to the Memorial.
The Memorial is a national tribute of remembrance and honor to the 2,983 people killed in the terror attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, and Feb. 26, 1993.

116th welcome home celebration is Saturday

BLACKFOOT — The community of Blackfoot is hosting a welcome home celebration for the 116th Cavalry Brigade Combat Team of the Idaho National Guard from 6-8 p.m. Saturday at the parking lot between Wooton Way and Royal Street. There will be a bonfire and free chili, cookies and beverages for all soldiers, their families and community members.
Blackfoot Mayor Mike Virtue said the event will be very informal to allow the returned soldiers to spend time with family and friends without obligation.

Blackfoot Council passes policy on employee recreation perks

BLACKFOOT — The Blackfoot City Council passed an employee policy at their meeting Tuesday defining employee recreation discounts at the Blackfoot Pool and Golf Course.
Councilman Rich Woodfin said city employees have been receiving discounts for several years but there is no policy defining what the discount is and who is eligible to receive the discounts.
"It's been brought to my attention from a number of people," Woodfin said. "Really there is no policy at this time."

Herman Aikele, 87

Herman Aikele, 87, of Moore passed away peacefully Sunday, Oct. 16, 2011 at his son’s home in Blackfoot surrounded by family.
Herman was born March 11, 1924 in Moore to Andreas Johannes Aikele and Josephine Partington. He attended school and graduated from Moore High School. He then went on to attend the University of Idaho and Idaho State University. He served his country in the U. S. Navy in World War II.

Brenda A. Young, 54

Brenda A. Young, 54 of Pingree was called back to heaven on Friday, Oct. 14, 2011. She was a wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and a friend to many who all loved her. She will be missed.
Brenda was born Feb. 28 1957 in Burley. She married the love of her life, Owen Young, on Aug, 19 1972 in Blackfoot at the home of Owen’s parents.
She was a mother of four children, then later in life she went to work at J.R. Simplot for 18 years in Aberdeen. Due to health reasons, she retired.
