January 16, 2012

FIRTH — Two Firth High School graduates who are now Bingham County deputy sheriffs addressed bullying and sexting at a school assembly on Monday. They addressed students from the high school, the middle school and about 30 parents.
The intent of this assembly was to educate students, said Bingham County Sheriff's Deputy Burkam Burnett.
Addressing the students, Burnett said, "Parents are responsible for you until you are 18 years old. Before you do something, think, 'would I do this in front of my parents?'
Whatever you do must be reported to your parents, he said.

Lap-Band surgery helps woman change her life

BLACKFOOT — Nikki Asher knew she needed to change her life. She had seen family members suffer from complications related to obesity and diabetes and she had been overweight her entire life, trying various diets and exercise to no avail.
Last year she decided to have adjustable gastric banding surgery—Lap-Band—performed by Dr. Anthony Davis at Bingham Memorial Hospital. The Lap-Band system reduces the stomach's capacity, restricting the amount of food able to enter the stomach.

Woman recounts story of icy rescue

January 15, 2012

Editor's Note: The woman in this story requested that we only use her first name.
BLACKFOOT — "I just couldn't watch her drown. There was an overwhelming feeling that I needed to do something now."
That's why Ann went against everything she has been taught about the ice.
On Nov. 29 she went to Jensen Grove with her three schnauzers to feed some leftover popcorn to the ducks. Two of the dogs were on a leash with the third allowed to roam.
"I let the one that usually minds the best just run free," she said.
She came to regret that decision.
