Doctor serves, coordinates donation

BLACKFOOT — Dr. Renée Volny has a passion for service and helping those in underdeveloped or underserved communities, and her decision to work as a locum tenens—or traveling physician—provides her the flexibility to do so.
For most physicians in the U.S. who open their own practice or take a permanent position at hospitals or clinics, the opportunity to go on medical missions is rare. But Volny, who specializes in obstetrics and gynecology and is currently on a nine-month assignment at Bingham Memorial Hospital, is able to schedule her assignments around her medical missions.

Toys for Tots seeks help

BLACKFOOT — Started in 1947, the Marine Corps Reserve is once again sponsoring Toys for Tots.
"We just want to make sure kids have a little bit of Christmas," said Bingham County Treasurer Janice Lawes.
New, unwrapped toys are being accepted until Thursday, Dec. 15, at the following locations:
In Blackfoot:

Artist's works to be on display in SLC

BLACKFOOT – Ken Spencer, a nationally recognized artist who calls Blackfoot, Idaho home, will show some of his original inspirational paintings at the prestigious Inspirational Artist Association Christmas Showcase at the Joseph Smith Memorial Building in Salt Lake City next week.
Spencer will exhibit some recent painting from his trip to Nauvoo and his adventures down the Grand Canyon. His works will include paintings of historical buildings in Nauvoo and breathtaking canyon scenes.

Community celebrates Sarah Asmus

THOMAS — The life of Sarah Constance Asmus was celebrated Wednesday at her funeral.
Sarah Constance Asmus, age 18, died Sunday from injuries suffered in a car accident on Saturday as she was heading home from the University of Idaho for Thanksgiving break.
Asmus graduated in 2011 from Snake River High School as the valedictorian of her class and president of the Honor Society.
Asmus is the daughter of Kurt Asmus, a captain with the Blackfoot Police Department, and Elaine Asmus, a science teacher at Snake River High School.

Student donation drive benefits Crisis Center

BLACKFOOT — Students at Donald D. Stalker Elementary collected more than 1,000 items in one month to donate to the Bingham Crisis Center. The donation drive kicked off Oct. 22 in conjunction with "Make a Difference Day."
The donation drive was organized by Stalker Elementary's Parent Teacher Association and Sheila Evans, the school's Idaho Reads! VISTA representative.
Students and their parents donated 1,300 items including food, toiletries and other items to the Bingham Crisis Center.

Wallace Dean Hart, 85

November 22, 2011

Wallace Dean Hart, 85, of Blackfoot, passed away on Saturday, Nov. 19, 2011 at his home in Blackfoot.
Wallace was born on Oct. 7, 1926 in Idaho Falls to Clarance and Seretta Mae Green Hart. He was raised in the Pocatello area and graduated from Pocatello High School. He attended Idaho State University and later earned an accounting degree from Brigham Young University.

Sarah Constance Asmus, 18, of Blackfoot passed away Sunday, Nov. 20,
2011 from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.
Sarah was born March 24, 1993 in Idaho Falls to Kurt Paul Asmus and Elaine Garbarino Asmus.
Sarah was the beloved sister to Rachel Josephine Asmus. She lived her entire lifetime in Blackfoot, attending school in the Snake River School District, graduating in 2011 from Snake River High School as the valedictorian of her class and president of the Honor Society.

Loyal E. Birchell, 96

Loyal E. Birchell, 96, of Blackfoot, passed away on Saturday, Nov. 19, 2011 at the Bingham Memorial Extended Care Facility in Blackfoot.
Loyal was born on March 21, 1915 in Roosevelt, Utah to Ephriam Smith and Straussie May Schilslar Birchell. He was raised in the Roosevelt area, attended schools in Ouray and Vernal, and graduated from Roosevelt High School.
Loyal served in the Army 77th Division and was a part of the U.S. occupational force in Japan.
