Cox file unsealed

BLACKFOOT — In the Christopher Cox case, Magistrate Judge Charles Roos unsealed most of the documents regarding this case.
The 38-year-old Cox is the former Snake River Junior High School principal who is accused of three counts of sexual abuse of a child under age 16. It is alleged the victim was 14-years-old at the time of the incidents. She has since left the area.
Judge Roos said he was going to vacate the order [to seal the case] because it "was not properly done."

Recall petition filed against Blackfoot school board member Lipovac

A group of citizens has submitted a recall petition against Blackfoot school board member Peter Lipovac to the Bingham County Clerk's office .
The Idaho Code refers to this recall petition as a "prospective petition."
The determination by the clerk triggers a 75-day deadline for whomever is behind the recall effort to submit the required number of signatures to the clerk's office, said Bingham County Prosecuting Attorney Scott Andrew. (This is called "perfecting" the petition.)

I.F. bomb squad recovers possible explosive device

March 1, 2012

On Tuesday, Feb. 28, at 4:18 p.m., the Blackfoot Police Department responded to an apartment complex on South Broadway in Blackfoot reference a possible explosive device.
When officers arrived on scene, they found the device in a vacant apartment. Officers sent a picture and description to the Idaho Falls bomb squad who later came to the scene.
The neighboring apartments were evacuated, said Blackfoot Police Captain Kurt Asmus.
The device was made safe and is being examined by the bomb squad. No one was injured.
The officers were on the scene for four hours, Asmus said.

Anderson files for state House

Blackfoot businessman, rancher and philanthropist Neil Anderson filed Wednesday to run for the Idaho House of Representatives District 31 Seat A.
"I am running for this office because I love Idaho and I have an affinity for the people who live here," Anderson said. "I've spent 40 years making a living and now that living is secure, I'm able to help in other ways.
"I believe I have the ability, the experience and the moral compass to provide competent, effective representation to my fellow residents in Bingham County and my neighbors throughout the state."

Sheriff files for reelection

Sheriff Dave Johnson filed for reelection Wednesday. If elected, he would be serving his third term of office.
"I'm running for office again because there is still more to do," the sheriff said.
Johnson stressed the changes of attitude in the workplace that have happened in the past 7 1/2 years.
"We have a great staff," he said. "It's really good to see the team coming together; everyone is pulling together.
"Everyone has an opportunity to excel and be recognized for their strengths," Johnson said.
"Officers are receiving more training," he said.

Ohio shooting suspect may have used relative's gun

CHARDON, Ohio (AP) — The teenager suspected in an Ohio school shooting struggled with a broken family and did poorly in school, then appeared to turn himself around once he was taken in by grandparents and began to attend an alternative school, longtime neighbors and friends said Wednesday.
To a person, they expressed disbelief at how the quiet but friendly boy could now be a suspect in a shooting that left three people dead and appears to have involved a gun that disappeared from his grandfather's barn.

Bomb squad finds homemade explosive device

February 29, 2012

BLACKFOOT - On Tuesday evening, the Idaho Falls Bomb Squad was called to investigate an incident at some apartments located at 1020 S. Broadway in Blackfoot. The bomb squad was called after a maintenance worker found a device that resembled large fireworks.
Sergeant Buddy Fowler said the device "is not necessarily a bomb, but it is a homemade device with the capability of being explosive."
The bomb squad removed the device from the scene and will detonate it at their facility.

Chamber honors Bingham Memorial Hospital

February 29, 2012

Shirley Brumfield, president of the Greater Blackfoot Chamber of Commerce, and executive director Leah Rigby presented the Business Member of the Year award to Bingham Memorial Hospital on Tuesday.
"With all your support, we felt you deserved an award," Brumfield told Lee Kniffin, the chairman of the hospital board. "Bingham Memorial does a lot of things for the Chamber throughout the year."
As he accepted the plaque symbolizing the award, Kniffin said, "Bingham Memorial is honored to receive the Chamber's first Outstanding Member of the Year award.

Moreland woman celebrates Leap Day birth

Every four years, people born on Feb. 29 celebrate a unique birthday. For every four years that pass, they add only one year to their age.
Celebrating her 14th birthday today is Ann Marie Ropp from Moreland.
“It’s crazy and kind of exciting having a birthday on the 29th,” Ropp said. “It’s a unique day.
“I always have great parties on my birthday,” she said. “My parents, husband, kids and co-workers have always made my birthday special.
