New Math Program explored at SR

ROCKFORD — Sixth grade math teachers and one second grade teacher enthusiastically reported on their test drive of the Star Enterprise Math Program to the Snake River Board of Trustees on Wednesday.
The Star Enterprise Math Program is an accelerated math program that is aligned to the common core, vertically and horizontally, said sixth grade math teacher Carol Adams. Adams headed up piloting this program for the last couple months.
"Star Enterprises bridges assessment and instruction," she said. "The testing helps the teacher personalize math to their students."

Blackfoot golfers host Idaho Falls and Hillcrest

BLACKFOOT — The Blackfoot High School golf team took to the links of the Blackfoot Golf Course Wednesday afternoon to take on Idaho Falls and Hillcrest.
The teams played nine holes during the afternoon.On the boys side Hillcrest finished first with a score of 157, Blackfoot finished third with a score of 184.
Kaden Loveland and Aaron Carter led the Broncos by each shooting 43 on the afternoon. Mason Gillins shot a 46, Kyler Croxford finished at 52 and Shan Leavitt shot a 55.
Hillcrest's Andy Hess shot the low score of the day with a 37.

Citizens, city officials explore options for solving 'train problem'

Some "out of the box" ideas were offered to Blackfoot Mayor Paul Loomis and the Blackfoot City Council on how to contend with the city's "train problem" at a town hall meeting held in Blackfoot on Tuesday night.
About 60 concerned citizens attended the meeting called by Loomis as the city prepares to apply for a Tiger Grant through the U.S. Department of Transportation in hopes of getting $1 million to have a feasibility study done on what can be done to work around the trains that have been aggravating residents for years.

Russets double up Redskins to open district play

SHELLEY — Prior to Tuesday District 6 opener with Teton, Shelley head coach Trent Armstrong reminded his team of the goal they had set for the themselves for the next few weeks.
Go through district play 6-0.
The Russets knew that the visiting Redskins were going to be tough. They also had to deal with Mother Nature who threw 30-plus mph winds and even a little rain at both schools.
But Shelley got a a solid start from Tyler Bean and six RBI hits to earn a 6-3 win over Teton at Shelley High School.

Meat-processing firm breaks ground on Shelley plant

On Monday dignitaries turned the first shovelsful of dirt for a meat-processing plant which will eventually employ 200 people near Shelley.
"We're going to start turning dirt in the next two or three days," said Bryce Esplin, CEO of Golden Valley Natural. "We anticipate completion in April of next year."
Golden Valley Natural is a producer of organic meat snacks based in Idaho Falls. It currently employs 270 people. The 200,000 square foot facility in Shelley will employ an additional 200 people.

Community celebrates life of courageous woman

BLACKFOOT—Dozens of people from all over gathered to attend Jessie Woodland's funeral at Hawker Funeral Home on Saturday morning.
According to Jessie's aunt, Tammy Cobbley, Jessie planned everything about her funeral. "We asked her if she wanted us to party or do something serious to celebrate her life and she said she wanted it all - which is exactly how she lived her life," said Cobbley.
Jessie's battle with gastric cancer has touched the hearts of many in our community and has brought us all together to help rally on her and her family's behalf.

How to become a princess

Dozens of young children and their escorts became princesses courtesy of the A Capella class at Snake River High School on Saturday.
"Being able to take my granddaughters to this is just so wonderful. They absolutely love it! We look forward to it every year," said Paula Parks.
A Capella students dressed up as Disney princesses and princes to host a tea party, a puppet show, dancing, singing, princess charm school, nail painting, crown making and more.
"I think my favorite part is the crown making," said Reese Adakai.

Lady Broncos end Lady Panthers winning streak at 13 with 11-10 win

BLACKFOOT — After watching their one run led slip away in the top of the seventh inning on a wild throw that allowed a run to score, the Blackfoot Lady Broncos knew they had to aggressive if they wanted to pull out a win and end the crosstown rival Panthers 13-game winning streak.
The Broncos were just that.
Sami Macfee led of the bottom of the seventh with a single and stole second and then came around to score on a ground ball to third hit by Madison Rigby when the throw sailed over the first baseman's head and out of play giving Blackfoot the 11-10 victory.

Blackfoot teen to dance at Jazz halftime

Blackfoot High School student Taylor Smiddy has been selected to dance at the final Utah Jazz regular season home game against the Los Angeles Lakers at the Energy Solutions Arena in Salt Lake City on Monday. Smiddy will dance with a group of other high school aged dancers, most of whom are from Utah, in this special halftime performance.

Eight-run fifth propels Lady Panthers to 13th consecutive victory

RIVERSIDE — Opening the season winners of their first 12 games, the Snake River Lady Panthers have done all of the little things well enough to win ballgames.
Playing solid defense, hitting the ball and getting good pitching have be a constant for the team all season.
They also have not trailed very often this season.
But that normally solid Snake River defense showed some cracks on Friday against District opponent Bear Lake, but the offense made up for the mistakes as an eight-run fifth inning gave the Panthers a 15-5 win over the Bears at Riverside Elementary School.
