Sorensen: Official Iron Man

BLACKFOOT – It’s official –– 33-year-old Josh Sorensen is an Iron Man. He completed the Arizona Iron Man in November with a time of 11 hours and 11 minutes.
Sorensen’s road to Iron Man was quite unintentional. Five years ago Sorensen, who is an eighth grade social studies teacher at Snake River Junior High, sat bored along the edge of the Blackfoot Swimming Pool supervising students while they swam every Monday as part of an after-school program. One day, he decided to use the time and began swimming laps himself.

Family shares its light display with community

BLACKFOOT — As the sun sets in the west each night, Scott Wood flips on a switch and a beautiful Christmas display lights up.
And, if you tune to 100.1 FM while you're near his parents' house at 544 Airport Road, you will be able to witness a synchronized performance.
"We do it because it's fun," Wood said of the display at Don and Sherry Wood's home. "It's our family hobby, something we do as a family.
"We do it mostly for the boys at Christmas," Wood continued.

Blackfoot High band concert tonight

BLACKFOOT – The sounds and joy of the season will fill the Blackfoot Performing Arts Center tonight at the Blackfoot High School Christmas concert. This year's concert plan to offer more than customary, beautiful holiday music from the bands and choirs.
Band Director Jan Eddington is particularly excited about a piece that will be played by the Symphonic Band. The challenging piece by Ralph Vaughan Williams will feature guest harpist Leslie Mielke and flutist Robert Cannon, a senior at BHS.

D55 schools to have three-hour early release Monday

BLACKFOOT — Schools in the Blackfoot School District will have a three-hour early release Monday in lieu of the regular one-hour early release. The family of Dane Petersen requested the early release to allow bus drivers who worked with Dane to attend his funeral. Dane's father, Chad, also works at Miles Bus Co.
The early release will also make it possible for Dane’s classmates and staff members who work with Marsha Petersen, who teaches at Groveland Elementary, or who had Dane as a student, the opportunity to attend the funeral.

Methodists schedule Christmas cantata

BLACKFOOT – The "Ceremony of Candles", a Christmas and Advent Cantata will be presented by the Jason Lee Memorial United Methodist choir Sunday at 7 p.m.
Randi Lemieux has directed the choir for over 30 years. Lemieux, who has a minor in music and choral directing, says she enjoys the presentation every year.

State VFW honors Blackfoot High teacher

BLACKFOOT — When Hero Shiosaki, a former commander of Blackfoot's Veterans of Foreign Wars post, saw Holly Kartchner teach at Blackfoot High School, he knew she was someone special.
"She amazed me with the way she taught," Shiosaki said. He noted that when a student answered a question incorrectly, Kartchner repeated it, then gave the correct answer in a non-threatening way.
"The students learned something that day," Shiosaki said. "I saw that she's getting through to all those kids.
"She's a dedicated person who wants her kids to learn something," he added.

Scouts donate bikes to Toys for Tots

BLACKFOOT — Boy Scout
Troop 201 from Riverside
delivered 11 bikes to Toys for
Tots. This project is sponsored
by the Marine Corps Reserve.
“We wanted to give back
to the less fortunate,” said
scout Caden White. “We are
thankful for what we have; we
just wanted to make someone
else’s Christmas.”
The scouts also donated
two bikes to the Bingham
Crisis Center.
People living in the
Riverside contributed the
bikes, said scoutmaster Steve
Fullmer. The scouts put them
together.

Commissioners ratify council election results

BLACKFOOT — The canvass
of the Blackfoot city council
runoff election was approved
by the Bingham County commissioners
Wednesday.
Butch Hulse received 450
votes which was 57.8 percent
of the vote. Clair Broadhead
received 328 votes which was
42.2 percent. The votes cast
for both candidates totaled
778.
The number of absentee
ballots issued totaled 207. The
number of returned absentee
ballots totaled 177. This was
almost 23 percent of the total
votes cast.

Amber alert issued for missing Rexburg girls

December 14, 2011

REXBURG — An Amber Alert has been issued from Rexburg. According to the report, ex-wife Heather Fisher has kidnapped two girls who were in the custody of Justin John. She came to the girls' school and removed them from the school at 9 a.m., police say. They also said the mother, who has no rights to the children, took them after not seeing the girls for two years. The custodial parents called in at 2 p.m.

Tommy Vaughn's Grill cuts Chamber ribbon

BLACKFOOT — Although Tommy Vaughn's Grill has been a member of the Greater Blackfoot Chamber of Commerce from Day One in October, general manager Tyler Rupe formalized that membership with a ribbon-cutting on Tuesday.
"We respect everybody in the Chamber," Rupe said, "all the great business leaders in our community. We see the networking between everybody, that they all work so well together and we want to be a part of that."
