Library opens with reading program

THOMAS — The new facilities at the Snake River School/Community Library opened with its summer reading program this week. The library is open from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Thursday during the summer.
The summer reading program is at 10 a.m. and 12 noon each Wednesday and Thursday and lasts through June.
Activities are scheduled for younger children, said librarian Sherrilynn Bair. “For kids in junior high and above, there will be video editing next week and photo editing the following two weeks.”
“Signing-up is not necessary,” she said. “Just come.”

Polly Heaney, 87

Polly Heaney, age 87, A Long time resident of Aberdeen, passed away on June 7, 2011 at Spring Creek Independent Living in Boise.
A celebration of her life will be held June 25th at her home. A full obituary will follow.

Lorraine O. Mecham, 84

POCATELLO — Lorraine O. Mecham, 84, passed away peacefully early Tuesday morning, June 7, 2011 at a local hospital. 
Please note: Lorraine’s funeral will take place next week at 11 a.m. Friday, June 17, 2011 at the Holman Ward LDS Chapel, 4890 Whitaker Road, Chubbuck.
A viewing will be held from 6 to 8 p.m., Thursday, June 16, 2011 at Wilks Funeral Home, 211 W. Chubbuck Rd., and also one hour prior to the services at the church on Friday.
Burial will follow the services at the Restlawn Memorial Gardens. 
A full obituary will appear in a future edition of the Morning News.

Joseph ‘Joe’ Oral Jacob, 81

Joseph “Joe” Oral Jacob, 81, of Blackfoot, Idaho, died of a long-term illness Tuesday at Bingham Memorial Hospital.
Joseph was born in Victor, Idaho, to Luella and Joseph Jacob. Joseph, known to his family and friends as Joe, served as a first lieutenant in the Air Force during the Korean War as a navigator instructor.
Joseph met and married the love of his life, Jannette Peterson, on Nov. 18, 1955, in the LDS Salt Lake Temple and lived in Albany. Joe and Jannette were happily married for 55 years at the time of his death.

Snake River trustees approve 2011-2012 budget

THOMAS — Snake River School District trustees unanimously approved the 2011-2012 budget on Wednesday.
Chris Nelson, the district's business manager, noted that revenue for the district is down $730,000.
To make up some of this difference, the district has transferred $356,000 of previously dedicated funds. These one-time designated funds come from the state tobacco fund and from savings.

Knights tame Broncos

BLACKFOOT — Mother Nature showed her bi-polar personality on Wednesday afternoon and the Blackfoot Broncos were swept by Hillcrest as they battled the elements and the Knights falling 10-6 in the opener and then dropped the nightcap 8-6 in eight innings.
"It was a difficult day today," Blackfoot head coach Jeff Katseanes said. "We had our chances, especially there in the second game but we just didn't close it out."

Panthers split with Cats'

THOMAS — The Snake River American Legion team picked up a big split with the visiting Madison Cats on Wednesday afternoon by winning game one 6-4 and dropping the late game 14-3 in five innings.
"I think that overall I was pleased with the way that we played today, especially in the first game," Snake River skipper Tom Strickland said. "We played good defense, had some good pitching. In the second game we had a rough first inning or I think that we would have been right in it."

LEAD director receives SBA award

BLACKFOOT — Jayson Meline, executive director of the Latino Economic and Development Center (LEAD), shared a statewide award presentation with members of the Greater Blackfoot Chamber of Commerce on Wednesday.
Irene Gonzalez, a representative of the Small Business Administration, presented Meline with the organization's Minority Small Business Champion of the Year award.

Owen Lavell Durfee, 81

Owen Lavell Durfee, 81, of Pingree passed away Sunday, June 5, 2011, at the home of his daughter, Ann Sutton, in Twin Falls.
Owen was born April 13, 1930 in Tremonton, Utah, to Melvin Henry Durfee and Erma Sophia Johnson. He was raised until the age of six in Almo, then moved to Pocatello and remained there until 1973 when he moved to Pingree.  He attended school in Pocatello. Owen served his country in the United States Army in the Korean Conflict.
On Aug. 28, 1953, Owen married Patty Lois Rhoades in Pocatello. Their marriage was later solemnized the Idaho Falls LDS Temple in 1959.

Whitney Johnson, 91

Whitney Owen Johnson, 91, of Groveland, passed away June 6, 2011, at Bingham Memorial Hospital of old age.
He was born Nov. 6, 1919, in the farming community of Groveland. His parents, Michael Johnson Jr. and Elsie Mae Paskett Johnson, purchased an 80-acre dairy farm in Groveland where he would live and work for half his life. They also raised apples on the dairy farm. The Johnsons raised potatoes, beets, hay and snakes on a second farm at the end of Bond Road near the lavas.
